This project emerged from a desire to create a structured framework that would encourage me to maintain a consistent creative practice. After being gifted an epic 50x50 canvas that my friend Delaney found on the curb, I developed a score for my collaging practice: I would listen to an album that I hadn't listened to for a long time or was entirely new to me and would add to the canvas surface for the entirety of the album.
Over time, BIG BLUE revealed to me lessons on collective grief and the powerful potential that embodiment and creative practice has to keep us afloat. Amidst our grieving (from the personal to political), we can still keep room for surprise and levity.
This is an archive of these working sessions.
November 30, 2024
I added a lot of organic looking vegetation around the borders, 3 black glittering arrows, and many little details. I thought about how messy, surprising, secretive, and nonsensical grief is. I listened to Solange's 2019 album "When I Get Home".

Stardust by Runnner
I wrote a poem by Emily Dickinson that I found on pages 40-42 in "The Essential Emily Dickinson". It swirls in black ink on the top 3 blue pathway to underneath in a pattern similar to the aging rings in a tree. I listened to Runnner's New Album "Stardust".

Don't Let the Kids Win by Julia Jacklin
I brought some of the blue paper strips down through the bottom right quadrant. The movement of the material reminds me of water streams and brush hair back into a ponytail. I listened to Julia Jacklin's 2016 album, "Don't Let the Kids Win".

Blue by Joni Mitchell
I finished the upper right tidal wave. Thinking of leaving the pinks and oranges as is instead of painting them blue as originally planned. I listened to Joni Mitchell's 1971 album "Blue" (how fitting!). She performed at the Grammy's last night and made me cry.
January 3, 2024
I finished the lower left tidal wave of blue painted materials and pasted some of them in the strips of blue. I listed to "Honey" by Samia.
